Scientific Literature On Saw Palmetto
The berries are rich in the bioactive compound beta-sitosterol, which has been found to help maintain urinary health and promote prostate health and function.
Saw Palmetto.
Compounds in saw palmetto have the ability to block an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT, the latter of which is more androgenic and can cause hair loss in the genetically susceptible.
A couple of preliminary studies suggest supplementation with saw palmetto can promote hair regrowth, prevent additional hair loss and prevent a healthy prostate size, though more research is needed before strong conclusions can be made.

Is it really organic?
Yes. The farms from which we source all our Saw Palmetto are 100% certified organic. This means there are no harmful chemicals, pesticides, fungicides, or herbicides used on the supplements you consume. These are supplements at their most natural.

Benefits Of Saw Palmetto
* Reduce hair loss by blocking DHT
* Decreasing symptoms of an enlarged prostate by blocking DHT
* You may need to get up less often at night to pee
* It can improve your flow when you go by lowering the amount of pressure on the tubes that carry urine in males
* It can ease painful urination
* Reduce the risk of urinary tract infections

Prostate Size
The human prostate grows with age. This continued growth can enlarge the prostate to the extent that it compresses the urethra and limits the flow of urine, causing urinary symptoms
Symptoms include urine hesitancy, poor stream, incomplete voiding, urinary retention, and overflow incontinence as well as irritative symptoms including frequent urination, and urgent urination.
In general, DHT is thought to be a critical mediator of prostatic growth.
Evidence is mixed about whether saw palmetto works to treat BPH (prostate gland enlargement). Several studies suggest that the herb is effective for treating symptoms, including too frequent urination, having trouble starting or maintaining urination, and needing to urinate during the night.
The urethra, the tube that empties urine from the body, runs through the prostate gland in men. When the prostate gland is enlarged, men may have trouble urinating.
Some studies show that saw palmetto is as effective in treating symptoms as finasteride (Proscar) without side effects, such as loss of libido. Other studies suggest that saw palmetto may actually shrink the size of the prostate gland.
Due to the short duration (usually less than 3 months) of these studies, it is not possible to say for sure whether saw palmetto is truly effective for preventing complications of BPH.

Hair Loss
About 10 per cent of testosterone in all adults is converted to DHT.
High levels of DHT, can shrink your hair follicles as well as shorten the hair cycle, causing hair to grow out looking thinner and more brittle, as well as fall out faster.
DHT can also make it take longer for your follicles to grow new hairs once old hairs fall out.
Some people are more susceptible to these effects of DHT on scalp hair based on variations in their androgen receptor (AR) gene. Androgen receptors are proteins that allow hormones like testosterone and DHT to bind to them. This binding activity typically results in normal hormonal processes like body hair growth.
Compounds in saw palmetto have the ability to block an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT.
Saw Palmetto's effects on DHT production have also led to saw palmetto being used for BPH (prostate gland enlargement) and reducing hair loss.

Scientific Evidence
Two well-conducted studies, for example, found that saw palmetto was no better than a placebo in relieving the signs and symptoms of BPH.
Hair loss
One review of 7 studies found that oral and topical supplements containing saw palmetto improved hair quality by 60%, raised total hair count by 27%, and increased hair density in 83% of people with hair loss.
Prostate Size & Urine Flow
A 2014 randomized trial of 225 men with lower urinary tract symptoms and BPH examined the efficacy and tolerability of combination therapy between saw palmetto, lycopene, and selenium plus tamsulosin versus single therapies.
The findings suggest that combination therapy of saw palmetto, lycopene, selenium, and tamsulosin is effective in increasing urinary flow rate.
It was noted that after 6 months of treatment, the combination therapy significantly improved symptom scores compared with a single therapy, and from 6 to 12 months, combination therapy demonstrated significant improvement in urine flow rate. There were no reported treatment-related adverse events associated with combination therapy.
A 2018 phase IV, non-inferiority, open-label, clinical trial (SPRITE study) of 404 participants found that treatment with saw palmetto, selenium, plus lycopene (SeR-Se-Ly) was not inferior to tadalafil 5 mg for improving the International Prostate Symptom Score and maximum urinary flow rate in men with lower urinary tract symptoms.
There is conflicting research out there on Saw Palmetto ability to help with an enlarged prostate and urinary tract symptoms. Other studies little or no improvement. This is likely due to the quality of the supplement used.
Our Saw Palmetto specification is 45% Fatty Acids which makes it extremely potent. It’s likely lower specifications were used in these studies hence the lack of results.
Warning
While DHT will increase the chances of balding for those genetically predisposed, it is still an important hormone that has other effects on the body.
DHT Is also responsible for
* A deep voice
* Body hair, facial hair and muscle mass
* Growth of the penis, scrotum, and testicles as sperm production begins
* Changes in how fat is stored around your body
You need to weigh up the pros and cons of taking a DHT blocker and decide for yourself whether it’s worth it.
You should also experiment with the dosage. We sell Saw Palmetto in 100mg tablets which means you can choose the dosage for yourself.
Take between 1-5 tablets per day to find a balance of DHT levels that work best for you. You may find that a 500mg per day dose is effective at keeping the prostate a reasonable size and preventing hair loss, but it may lower libido for example. You may then want to consider a lower dose. Different supplements can affect different people differently.
